LADY COUGARS WIN AT HUNT MEMORIAL SHOOTOUT 🏀--- The NMHS Girls Varsity Basketball Team, participating in the Hunt Memorial Shootout for the first-time, defeated Santa Cruz High by the score of 65-23 on Saturday afternoon at Evergreen High School.

 

Highlights: Seven Cougars combined to nail nine 3-point FG's in the victory over the Cardinals. Haylee Nelson led all-scorers with 20-points & grabbed 13-rebounds, with Maleia Colker adding 9-points, and teammates Emily Sunada & Kylie Chan each scoring 8-points. Kylie also recorded 6-assists.

 

Next: The Cougars (5-0) play at Mountain View High (4-3) on Tuesday, December 19, with the JV game to begin at 5:30 pm, and the Varsity contest to follow at 7:00 pm. GO COUGARS!

Newark Optimist Club Girls Holiday Basketball Classic To Tip-Off

 

The annual Newark Optimist Club Girls Holiday Basketball Classic will be held at the Event Center, on the campus of Newark Memorial High School, on December 28, 29, and 30.

 

Eight outstanding high school Varsity basketball teams from throughout the Bay Area will be participating.

 

The schedule for opening day, Thursday, December 28:

 

3:15 pm  San Ramon Valley vs. Pittsburg 

 

4:45 pm  Santa Clara vs. Irvington 

 

6:15 pm  Arroyo vs. Burlingame 

 

7:45 pm  Los Altos vs. Newark Memorial 

 

Game times remain the same on Friday and Saturday, December 29 and 30.

 

Please plan to join us for some exciting basketball action.

The 2017-2018 Girls Basketball Season open this coming Thursday night, November 30, as the Cougars host Yerba Buena High School from San Jose.

 

The action tips-off with a 5:30 pm JV game in the Event Center, with the Varsity contest to follow at 7:00 pm. 

 

Wear your royal blue & gold and support the Cougars this season.

ATTENTION NMHS STUDENT-ATHLETES---Looking for Scholarship Money?----Enter the 2017-2018 Optimist International Essay Contest

The Newark Optimist Club (Club #20261) invites Tri-City resident students to participate in their 2017-2018 Essay Contest. This year’s topic for the 700-800 word essay is: “Can Society Function Without Respect?” Students who are under the age of 18, as of October 1, 2017, and have not already graduated from high school, are eligible, and encouraged to enter the contest.

At the club level, 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place medallions and cash prizes ($200, $100, $50) will be awarded. The first place essay will also be sent to the District competition, where the winner will be awarded a $2,500 college scholarship.

NMHS ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT ANNOUNCEMENTS - WEEK OF OCTOBER 30 - NOVEMBER 3

1. The deadline to register for winter sports (basketball, soccer, wrestling) is THIS FRIDAY!! All registrations must be completed online and all physicals must be turned in to the Athletic Office by FRIDAY, 11/3, in order to attend tryouts Monday, 11/6.

2. The Winter Sports Orientation is THIS WEDNESDAY, 11/1, at 6:30 pm in the Old Gym. This is a very important meeting where department and team information will be distributed. Help with online registration will also be available.

3. The is a meeting for all SAAC members who plan to read at the elementary schools, on Wednesday at lunch in Coach K's office

4. Any student-athletes who have not yet turned in their Walk-A-Thon money, should do so in the Athletic Office ASAP.

DON'T MISS OUT ON YOUR OPPORTUNITY TO PLAY THIS WINTER----

 

1.  Attention all students planning to try out for a winter sport (basketball, soccer, wrestling) there is a mandatory athletic orientation on Wednesday Nov 1st at 6:30 pm in the Old Gym.  All students and families must attend as important athletic department and team information will be discussed.

2.  Students planning to try out for a winter sport (basketball, soccer, wrestling) MUST register online at familyid.com <http://familyid.com>  and submit a copy of a current physical BEFORE Friday Nov. 3 or you WILL NOT be allowed to try out.

3.  Sports physicals will be held this Thursday from 3-6pm at Washington High School.  The cost is $20, bring cash or a check made out to WHHS.

COUGARS ADVANCE TO NCS D2 SOFTBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS---Congratulations to the NMHS Varsity SoftballTeam (13-11 MVAL) who have been awarded the #9 seed in the 2017 NCS D2 Softball Championships.

The Cougars will begin tournament play against #8 seed Bishop O'Dowd (13-6 WAC-Foothill) on Wednesday, May 24, at the Castro Valley Community Center, with the first-pitch scheduled for 5:00 pm. GO COUGARS!

LADY COUGARS FALL TO DRAGONS IN STATE D2 BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP OPENER---The #12 seed NMHS Girls Varsity Basketball Team lost to #5 seed Sacramento High by the score of 65-31 on Wednesday night in Sacramento.

 

NMHS Highlights: Haylee Nelson (13-points), Tyler McNeil (8-points).

 

CONGRATULATIONS and THANKS to my players and coaches on a successful season, reaching the NCS semifinals, and advancing to NorCal for the second straight year. As their coach, I'm very proud of their effort, and the character they displayed throughout the year. COUGAR PRIDE!

LADY COUGARS RECEIVE MVAL GIRLS BASKETBALL ALL-LEAGUE RECOGNITION---

 

Congratulations to Newark Memorial junior HAYLEE NELSON for being selected to the MVAL All-League First-Team and named the MVAL'S "MOST VALUABLE PLAYER" for the 2016-2017 Girls Basketball season by the league's coaches.

 

Haylee averaged 19.4 points, 16.0 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks per game during league play. She recorded a double-double (points & rebounds) in 13 of the 14 league games she played.

 

Congrats also to senior TYLER MC NEIL and junior KYLIE CHAN for receiving "HONORABLE MENTION" recognition.

LADY COUGARS EDGE CONCORD IN NCS D2 BASKETBALL--Congratulations to the #13 seed NMHS Girls Varsity Basketball Team, who after defeating #4 seed Tamalpais on Tuesday night, traveled to Concord High on Friday night and beat the #5 seed Minutemen by the score of 54-51, in an exciting NCS Girls D2 Basketball quarterfinal game.

 

NMHS Highlights: Kylie Chan (game-high 14-points), Haylee Nelson (13-points), Rylee Sarasua (10-points), Tyler McNeil (9-points), Rita Evans (8-points).

 

Next: The Lady Cougars (16-12 MVAL) travel to Orinda on Wednesday night, March 1, to take on #1 seed Miramonte (25-3 Diablo-National) in an NCS D2 Girls Basketball semifinal game, with the tip-off set for 7:00 pm. GO COUGARS!

LADY COUGARS BEAT TAMALPAIS IN NCS D2 GIRLS BASKETBALL--Congratulations to the #13 seed Newark Memorial Girls Varsity Basketball Team who defeated #4 seed Tamalpais 55-42 in the opening round of the 2007 NCS D2 Girls Basketball Championships on Tuesday night in Mill Valley.

NMHS Highlights: Haylee Nelson (18-points), Kylie Chan (13-points), Rylee Sarasua (8-points), Tyler McNeil (7-points), Taty Tai (6-points), Emily Sunada (3-points).
