Hello! I am very excited to be in my 5th year teaching here at NMHS. I moved to the Bay Area from Boston where I earned both my M.Ed in Visual Art and my BFA in Photography. Please feel free to view my work on my portfolio site, www.sammatsumoto.com. I love all types of art but photography is my true passion. I am interested in how photography can be used as a means of engaging with the world, whether that engagement is just a greater awareness of one's surroundings or deep inquiry into an issue or idea. I am also interested in how art can facilitate discourse and help foster community.

In my courses students are asked to learn both technical and conceptual skills, to demonstrate craft and concept. We use photography to explore our ideas and study how photography shapes our current understandings.

Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions, concerns, or comments. I am easily reached at smatsumoto@newarkunified.org.
